Success Stories

There is a serious threat posed to human survival by food insecurity, especially among vulnerable communities such as the Maasai community who are pastoralists. Food security is a complex sustainable development issue, linked to health through malnutrition and reduced immunity increasing proclivity to disease (World Health Organisation, 2015). More so, the problem of hunger and food insecurity threatens efforts towards sustainable economic development, environmental preservation and trade. It is crucial for the world to find sustainable ways to secure adequate, nutritious food for its peoples, this means looking into agricultural practices.

Food security remains a key developmental agenda, evidenced by its inclusion in the global sustainable development goals. The second goal seeks to end hunger and achieve food security. There is a need for viable solutions to the hunger problem, particularly focusing on sustainable agricultural practices that will increase yields and also protect the environment. In a bid to achieve this Change Business Kenya and Village Economic Empowerment partnered with BMZ Germany to train the maasai community in ilbisil on sustainable agricultural practices and provided them with water for irrigation, seeds, farm inputs, agronomy services and bucket farming kits.

This was aimed at ensuring that the maasai community in ilbisil farm sustainably and are able to provide a balanced and nutritious food to their families thus ensuring that the community is food secure despite the adverse climatic change that is affecting their animals.
