Potato is the world’s most important root and tuber crop. It is grown in more than 125 countries and consumed almost daily by more than a billion people. In Kenya, Nyandarua and Kiambu counties are some of the counties that grow potatoes.
Hundreds of millions of people in developing countries depend on potatoes for their survival. Consumption of potato in kenya has been increasing over the past few years where the potato’s ease of cultivation and nutritive content have made it a valuable food security and cash crop for millions of small scale farmers. Many families eat it as staple food, but it is also becoming a significant source of income due to its short maturity time, high yields per unit area and the ability to harvest it twice a year.
However, it has been realized that potato production is hampered by lack of access to certified potato seed as well as limited knowledge on good and sustainable agricultural practices on potato production, post-harvest handling and market linkages. In a bid to mitigate these challenges, Change Business Kenya has partnered with Village Economic Empowerment to empower small scale potato farmers in Nyandarua and Kiambu counties through enabling access to farm inputs such as certified potato tubers, fertilizers, fungicides, herbicides, agronomy services and credit facilities. Change Business Kenya has also created a market linkages for these farmers, they can now easily access customers through our physical outlets in the urban centres and our ecommerce platform.
