Seed Sorting

Seed Sorting

Success Stories

Planting well sprouted potato tubers is key to achieving high yields. In the face of climate change, it is even more important to have well sprouted tubers to ensure a crop matures even when rains are low and erratic. In order to improve the quality of farm-saved seed, farmers are usually encouraged to conduct positive seed selection to improve the quality of the seeds.

A safe storage place must be provided for the potato produced until it is needed for multiplication purposes. Since potato production is seasonal and safe storage must maintain potato quality and quantity. This means that potatoes have to be protected from weather, molds and other microorganisms, moisture, destructively huge temperatures, insects, rodents, objectionable odours and contamination.

To ensure this is achieved and that farmers get good seeds for planting, Change Business Kenya constructed a seed sorting store where farmers sort out seeds and store it in the store as it awaits the planting season.
