Farmers  undergo a myriad of challenges that contribute to food insecurity. Some of this challenges include lack of proper food storage facilities ,low quality seed  and nutritional  imbalance among others.

Potatoes seed Curing Store

We are working on being a certified potato seed producing entity in Kenya. Currently, there are only 8 certified potato producing entities in the country. With the certification, our farmers will be assured of quality seeds that will maximize their yields. With this process we have built a seed curing store in Karangatha Nyandarua County, where potato seeds will be sorted, cured and certified. Then distributed to farmers as subsidies.

Cold Room

Change Business Kenya has built a cold room in Kinale Kiambu county which provides storage for harvested produce. This helps farmers store their yields and in turn increase the shelf life of potatoes for about 90 days whilst maintaining 90% of its nutrients, that is vitamin C and reduce the losses by up to 70%, thus minimizing food loss and wastage that occurs often when there is surplus production. This facility helps the farmer to store their produce at subsidized prices and also extends the life of fresh produce.

Green House

Agricultural and economic sustainability are pressing issues among the Maasai communities. Arable farming has become troublesome due to soil infertility and harsh climatic conditions. The adoption of agriculture by the Maasai within Ilbisil has often been a step down a path from which it has been difficult or impossible to return. This has immensely affected their health. One in four children are affected by acute malnutrition as well as a significant percentage of lactating mothers.

Change Business Kenya and Village Economic Empowerment partnered with BMZ to construct a green house in Ilbissil Kajiado which is a training ground for the community on sustainable farming practices. Alongside the greenhouse, we have introduced bucket farming initiatives to the community where each Household (Manyatta) benefits from a drip drop irrigation kit. They are able to improve their nutritional status through the skills learnt from the greenhouse training since they are able to grow vegetables.
